Tile is one of the most durable of flooring choices. Not very long ago, this was only a useful candidate for bathrooms. The cost of tile depends on how it is installed. Installation on a slab is preferred and cost effective. Installation over plywood isn't a good idea because plywood expands and contracts with moisture and will cause the tile to crack. Instead, use backerboard, but understand that it will cost several dollars a square foot more.
