Cracking, crumbling cement in front of your house is not a good sign. It could mean that the ground beneath your driveway was not properly prepared when the slab was first laid. A little flaking or peeling, which the concrete industry calls "spalling,"isn't necessarily so bad. If appearances don't matter, then you can fix a few small cracks by sealing the concrete. But if spalling sprawls over most of your driveway, it may pay to cut out the old driveway and start over.

Due to innovations like brick pavers and flagstones, driveways needn't be boring anymore. But be prepared to spend significantly more than you are likely to pay for concrete, which many believe is the Cadillac of driveways in California.
